About Lori King

Editor-in-chief of the Toledo Free Press

I am a retired military print journalist and a retired Toledo Blade photojournalist. Although I hung up my cameras for good (or so I thought), I’m still working in the journalism field as an editor-in-chief of a nonprofit, nonpartisan, hyperlocal online newsroom, as well as an educator and podcaster.

On June 3, 2024, I began my final stint as a full-time employee. I am now at the helm of the Toledo Free Press (TFP), and I couldn’t have even considerated the position without my many years of journalism, photojournalism and audio experience.

My journalism career began in the U.S. Army as a print journalist when I was 18, serving eight years active army, and 10 years in the Ohio Army National Guard and three years in the Air National Guard. I retired from the 180th Fighter Wing in Toledo in 2000. I retired from military in July 2000 and from the Toledo Blade in August 2021.

Current employment:

  • Editor-in-chief of the Toledo Free Press: June 3 2024 - present

  • Adjunct photojournalism and multimedia instructor at the University of Toledo. I teach the Integrated Media course, which I hope to turn into a teaching classroom for the TFP

  • Host/producer of the National Press Photographer Association’s (NPPA) The Visual Voice podcast

Education:

  • BS in photojournalism | Kent State | 1991

  • MA in Journalism Education at Kent State | 2012

  • Journalism Track | Defense Information School | U.S. Army | 1980

Volunteer of the Year Award for hosting and producing the Sword and Pen podcast for the Military Veterans in Journalism Network. I hosted the Sword and Pen for three years, but bid farewell during my last episode in May 2024 because of my new role with the Toledo Free Press.
